GLOBAL STATISTICS-THE NEED FOR LOCAL ACTIONS

The numbers tell a sobering story.  As of Oct 7, 2025, 140 million orphans exist worldwide, with 61 million in Asia and 52 million in Africa. HIV/AIDS alone has orphaned 14.9 million children, while conflicts and natural disasters continue to separate families daily.

According to UNESCO, Today, over 11 million children under the age of 15 living in Sub-Saharan Africa have been robbed of one or both parents by HIV/AIDS. Seven years from now, the number is expected to have grown to 20 million. At that point, anywhere from 15 per cent to over 25 per cent of the children in a dozen sub-Saharan African countries will be orphans – the vast majority of them will have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

India has the highest number of orphans globally, with estimates around 30 million children, followed by Nigeria with about 17.5 million, according to recent data. Other countries with large orphan populations include Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Pakistan, primarily due to factors like poverty, conflict, and disease.

Here are the countries with the most orphans

  • India: ~30 million
  • Nigeria: ~17.5 million
  • Ethiopia: ~5.6 million
  • Democratic Republic of Congo: ~4.1 million
  • Pakistan: ~3.9 million

Malawi has a young population: 66 percent of its 17 million people are under age 25; 53 percent are 18 and younger*. 16.7 percent of children under 18 are Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC).

An estimated 340,000 orphans exist in Sierra Leone. This significant number is largely due to the impacts of civil war, Ebola, COVID-19, and ongoing health crises like HIV/AIDS, which have left many children without parental support. Approximately 12% of children in the country have lost one or both parents, with the highest rates observed in the Eastern, North-West, and Northern provinces, as well as the Western Area.
